Algie, the Miner (1912)
Length: 13min References: IMDb Original project format: black & white, nemi short fiction
Summary: | Some of Guy-Blaché's favourite themes get a runout in this western caper, from class to gender to loving self-sacrifice. In fact, it's not difficult to read this comedy of kissing cowboys as an early queer film, although of course it's heavily bound up in the ideas and stock characters that were popular at the time. Effeminate rich boy Algie Allmore is tasked with becoming more butch by his girlfriend's imposing father. He sallies forth in some outrageous dude fashions to a western mining camp where, among the hard-drinking geezers, he learn how to shoot straight and swap his dinky pistol for a strapping six-shooter. However, he also develops a close rapport with his bunkmate, Big Jim, who is suffering from too much of the hard stuff. A genuinely touching and even progressive film, which illustrates Guy-Blaché's capacity to combine rousing comedy, sincere emotion and sly social critique in a single reel. (PH, BFI brochure) |
